Hydrochloric acid is found in nature in gastric acid. In olden times it was called acidum salis, muriatic acid, and spirits of salt, hydrochloric acid was produced from vitriol (sulphuric acid) and common salt. Free hydrochloric acid was first formally described in the 16th century by Libavius. Later, it was used by chemists such as Glauber, Priestley and Davy in their scientific research.

Properties:

• The other ion formed is Cl⁻, the chloride ion. Hydrochloric acid can therefore be used to prepare salts called chlorides, such as sodium chloride.
• Of the six common strong mineral acids in chemistry, hydrochloric acid is the monoprotic acid least likely to undergo an interfering oxidation-reduction reaction.

Nitric acid (HNO₃), also recognized as aqua fortis and spirit of niter, is aN extremely corrosive strong mineral acid. The unadulterated compound is colorless, but older samples are likely to acquire a yellow cast due to decomposition into oxides of nitrogen and water. Most commercially obtainable nitric acid has a concentration of 68%. When the solution contains more than 86% HNO₃, it is referred to as fuming nitric acid. Depending on the amount of nitrogen dioxide present, teed off nitric acid is further characterized as white fuming nitric acid or red fuming nitric acid, at concentrations above 95%.

Properties:

• Commercially available nitric acid is an azeotrope with water at a concentration of 68% HNO₃, which is the ordinary concentrated nitric acid of commerce.
